I am in my yard in the Mad River flood plain, a sunny day in Arcata, California, facing west toward the Pacific Ocean. To the east are the coastal mountains of Northwestern California, to the South the King Range and the Lost Coast. I author and maintain this site. My father was from India, my mother from Britain. I was born and spent my childhood and youth in India – mostly in the university town of Kharagpur where my father was Professor of Naval Architecture (Indian Institute of Technology.) I have lived in Delaware, upstate New York, Texas, and California. I have hiked in  New York, Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Mexico, and California. My undergraduate education was at the Indian Institute of Technology at Kharagpur in West Bengal. I have a Master’s degree in Applied Mathematics and a Bachelor’s and a PHD in mechanical / aerospace engineering – with a focus on mathematics and science – from the University of Delaware. I have: taught at Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Texas – Austin, Humboldt State University – California,  run all phases of a restaurant, provided direct care of acute psychiatric services
