The image—1980, Barranca del Cobre (Copper Canyon) Mexico. I was climbing up and out of the Rio Urique Barranca, over the Sierra, toward the Barranca of Rio Batopilas. The photograph was taken by my hiking companion, Jim. We carried our food, water, sleeping bags and tent. It is late afternoon. We had gotten lost that morning and stumbled upon an isolated hamlet inhabited by a Señor and one of his wives; he informed us that he had other abodes and wives. We offered to pay for breakfast.
The Señora flew down the hillside, picked fresh tomatoes, ground corn, made tortillas, and fried the tomatoes which were served with goat cheese; there was fresh coffee. I shall not forget that little adventure in cuisine and humanity
My father was East Indian, my mother British. I was born and spent my youth in India—mostly in the university town of Kharagpur. My brother Robin and his wife Susan live in London and my daughter Carissa in Austin, Texas
